Health & Safety

The Solvents Industry Group works to ensure that organic solvents, specifically oxygenated and hydrocarbon solvents, continue to be recognized as important components of a wide range of products that improve our daily lives and also help make our lives safer and healthier, while meeting the challenges of today’s environmentally conscious world.

Group members seek to improve safety, health, and environmental performance of their products and to provide information on safe handling and use on an ongoing basis.

Using Solvents Safety

Hydrocarbon and oxygenated solvents have been in widespread use for over 50 years and have been the subject of extensive health and environmental effects studies. Many studies have been carried out in the United States and Europe to examine the effects of exposure to solvent vapors.

Many commonly used solvents are recognized as having relatively low toxicity. These solvents are not expected to pose significant hazards when used properly. Products with specific toxic effects should be subject to appropriate controls and/or restrictions on use.

In order to promote the continuing safe use of solvents, Solvents Industry Group members are committed to product stewardship; compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations; expanding understanding through scientific research; improving products; and providing health, safety, and environmental information on an ongoing basis.

Since 1988, members of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) have significantly improved their environmental, health, safety and security performance through participation in the Responsible Care® initiative.

Solvents help boost the cleaning power of laundry detergents. They attack grease, which helps keep our clothing looking good even after a spill.
